Mercury Thermometer/Thermostat Recycling

The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) and select member communities offer residents a recycling program for mercury-containing thermometers, thermostats and wall switches.  Mercury poses health and environmental risks. Mercury-containing products should be recycled whenever possible. Old thermometers contain up to 700 milligrams of mercury, 140 times more than a CFL.

The following communities provide drop-off locations for mercury thermometers, wall switches and thermostats. Please note that any resident that lives in a member community (SWANCC residents) are eligible to utilize this program.

Mercury may also be taken to Household Chemical Waste collection sites for disposal.
