As a courtesy to SWANCC community residents who have sensitive documents to destroy, such as medical records, tax forms, bank statements, etc., the Agency provides seasonal Document Destruction Events from May through October, hosted by member communities. The 2017 schedule will be posted in April.
Paper documents must be brought to the event in either paper shopping bags or boxes - NO PLASTIC BAGS - please! There is a limit of six paper shopping bags or file-size boxes per vehicle. Paper must be free of contamination, such as metal clips, plastic sleeves, folders, and binders. Also, please have your ID ready, as staff will be checking each vehicle. Workers will remove paper from vehicles to place in carts. Then documents will then be loaded into the shredding truck. The paper will be cross-shredded, baled, and eventually recycled into new paper products.
Residents of SWANCC member communities may participate in events. SWANCC communities include: Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Palatine, Park Ridge,Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, South Barrington, Wheeling, Wilmette, and Winnetka.
No business or institutional waste will be accepted.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, it is estimated that 10 million Americans were victims of identity theft last year, prompting the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) in Washington to issue new warnings about safekeeping financial information.
SWANCC's Green Pages: Reuse and Recycling Directory provides additional options for paper shredding.
